Katie Wortman is HIP Agriculture’s Programs & Operations Manager, supporting everything from farmer education and the Residential Apprenticeship Program to soil health demonstration trials, grant reporting, and day-to-day operations. She first moved to Hawaiʻi Island in 2019 to serve with FoodCorps at Kaʻū High and Pāhala Elementary, then earned a post-baccalaureate Certificate of Teaching in Secondary Science through Kahoʻiwai and taught high school agriculture and natural resources. She later managed Kohala Food Hub when it was still a program of HIP Agriculture, making her return to HIP feel like coming full circle.
Katie holds an M.S. in Sustainable Food Systems from Arizona State University and a B.A. in Environmental Analysis from Scripps College. Inspired by her ojiichan, who farmed in Gifu, Japan, and her husband, Cody, who is also a farmer, she believes farming is the most essential work there is. She lives in Honokaʻa and loves working alongside the HIP team, seeing the food, learning, and community that come together on and off the farm. Outside of work, she enjoys being in nature with Cody and their 3-year-old son, Bodhi.
