Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG) Nursery Technician

Position Title: Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG) Nursery Technician

Job Type: Part-time at 19 hours per week – Full Time Equivalency: 0.475

Compensation: $25 per hour, commensurate with experience

Reports to: Co-Directors, CIG Coordinator

Start Date: Fall 2024, dependent upon Federal contract start date

Overview of the Hawaiʻi Institute of Pacific Agriculture:

HIP Agriculture is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in North Kohala, Hawaiʻi. Our mission is to practice and teach regenerative agriculture through farm to school education, farmer training, and ecosystem restoration.  

Position Summary:

The Hawaiʻi Institute of Pacific Agriculture is seeking a dedicated and skilled Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG) Nursery Technician to support the propagation and maintenance of plant materials for the HIP Agriculture Soil Conservation Project. This role involves working closely with the Co-Directors and CIG Coordinator to ensure the successful growth of plants used in soil health demonstration trials and community propagation outlets. The ideal candidate will have experience in plant propagation, nursery management, and a strong commitment to sustainable agricultural practices. Duties include, but are not limited to:

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Nursery Operations:
    • Assist in the propagation of plants for use in Soil Health Demonstration Trials (SHDT) and Propagation Outlets for Distribution and Dissemination (PODDs).
    • Maintain nursery facilities, including watering, fertilizing, pruning, and pest management.
    • Monitor and document the growth and health of plants, ensuring they meet project standards.
  • Plant Propagation:
    • Prepare seeds, cuttings, and other plant materials for propagation.
    • Implement sustainable and organic methods for plant propagation and nursery management.
    • Ensure the proper labeling and tracking of plant materials for propagation to outplanting.
  • Data Collection and Reporting:
    • Record detailed information on planting schedules, growth rates, and plant health.
    • Assist in the collection of data related to the performance of propagated plants in SHDTs.
    • Provide regular updates and reports to the Co-Directors and CIG Coordinator.
  • Community Engagement:
    • Support community outreach efforts by preparing plant materials for workshops, field days, and other events.
    • Assist in the distribution of plant materials to participating producers and community members.
    • Represent HIP Ag at community events, sharing knowledge about nursery operations and plant propagation techniques. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field preferred. Equivalent work experience will also be considered. 
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in nursery management or plant propagation. 
  • Solid understanding of sustainable agricultural principles, soil health management, agroforestry, and regenerative agriculture. 
  • Proficiency in using tools, equipment, and machinery relevant to farm operations.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, capable of working independently or as part of a team.
  • Friendly, outgoing, and responsive to the public’s needs.
  • Proficiency in data collection and record keeping.
  • Must have a valid drivers license.

Work Environment:

  • Requires regular outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds. 
  • Must be able to work 8-hours in the field performing physical activities such as bending, lifting, and manual labor.
  • Must be comfortable with repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers as it relates to farm operations.
  • Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle. 

Terms & Compensation:

This is a part-time position to begin Fall 2024, with a projected duration of three years. Renewal contingent upon availability of funds, organization needs, and satisfactory performance. This hourly position starts at $25, commensurate with experience.

  • On-Farm Trial Implementation:
    • Assist in the setup, maintenance, and monitoring of Soil Health Demonstration Trials (SHDT) and POD’s across participating farms
    • Implement soil conservation practices, including cover cropping, compost application, and agroforestry techniques.
    • Coordinate with producers to ensure compliance with SHDT protocols and schedules.
    • Procure supplies and equipment for SHDT
  • Farm Operations:
    • Maintain HIP Ag Demonstration Plot and Composting Operations
    • Conduct daily farm operations such as planting, cultivating, harvesting, and post-harvest processing
    • Manage farm equipment and tools, ensuring they are maintained and used safely.
    • Implement pest and disease management using sustainable, organic practices.
  • Data Collection and Reporting:
    • Collect soil samples and record data related to soil health, crop performance, and environmental conditions.
    • Maintain detailed records of farming activities, inputs, and outputs.
    • Provide regular updates and reports to the Co-Directors and CIG Coordinator.
  • Producer Support and Training:
    • Provide technical assistance to participating producers, helping them implement and manage soil conservation practices.
    • Conduct on-farm training sessions and workshops for producers and community members.
    • Assist in organizing and facilitating peer-to-peer learning exchanges and field days.

Student Engagement Coordinator (SEC)

Job Type: Part-time at 5-19 hours per week – Full Time Equivalency: 0.125-0.475

Compensation: $20 per hour, commensurate with experience.

Position Summary:

The Hawaiʻi Institute of Pacific Agriculture is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Student Engagement Coordinator (SEC) to lead and support student involvement in the Garden-to-Cafeteria (G2C) program and other farm-to-school initiatives at Kohala High School. This role involves managing the Kohala High School garden, coordinating hands-on gardening activities, cultivate a student-led supply chain for local food production, and working closely with high school students, teachers, and community partners to integrate agricultural education into the curriculum. The ideal candidate will have strong gardening skills, experience in education and community engagement, with a strong commitment to sustainable food systems and student empowerment. Duties include, but are not limited to:

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Garden Management:
    • Lead the maintenance and development of the Kohala High School (KHS) garden as the lead grower, supporting the production of hydroponic lettuce, orchard fruit crops, and the fenced garden plot.
    • Implement sustainable gardening practices, including planting, watering, fertilizing, and pest management.
    • Coordinate the cultivation of produce to supply the school's Garden-to-Cafeteria (G2C) program.
    • Coordinate with the Kohala Food Hub (KFH) and KHS Food Service Manager to integrate student-grown produce into the cafeteria menu on a seasonal basis.
  • Student Engagement:
    • Engage students in hands-on gardening activities, teaching them about plant care, soil health, sustainable agriculture, local food procurement, garden management, and culinary activities. 
    • Conduct periodic school-wide taste-testing events and culinary workshops featuring student-grown produce.
    • Deliver educational classes and workshops focused on gardening techniques and the importance of local food systems.
    • Facilitate internships and mentorship programs for a limited number of students to gain hands-on experience in agriculture and food production.
    • Mentor students in managing garden projects, fostering leadership and responsibility.
  • Data Collection and Reporting:
    • Record information on planting schedules, harvest yields, and student participation. 
    • Assist in the collection of data related to the performance of G2C and agricultural education initiatives. 
    • Provide regular updates and reports to the Project Director.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Agriculture, or related field preferred. Equivalent work experience will also be considered. 
  • Solid understanding of sustainable and organic agricultural practices. 
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interact effectively with high school students and diverse community members.
  • Proficiency in using tools, equipment, and machinery relevant to garden and farm operations.
  • Proficiency in data collection and record keeping.
  • Must have a valid drivers license.
